The Great Gildersleeve is a radio situation comedy broadcast in the United States from August 31, 1941 to 1958. he made a bunch of films in the first half of the 1940s, then seems to have disappeared; died young at age 48, but that doesn't seem to be discussed anywhere. An offshoot of the Fibber McGee and Molly radio show, Harold Peary is "Gildersleeve", a sad sack who gets into trouble now and then. Harold Peary's title character is a delight. Small-town eccentric Throckmorton Gildersleeve (of radio fame) has a few problems: Judge Hooker continually questions his guardianship of niece Margie and nephew Leroy; the judge's predatory sister Amelia has matrimony in mind. Initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, it was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. The Great Gildersleeve might be a metaphor for The Fabulous Fool, because every day in Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve's life seems to be a bad day, a catch phrase for all of the regular characters in this series. Johnson's Wax, which sponsored Peary also found occasion to weave his singing voice into show episodes, such as "Mystery Voice" [5/10/1942] in which he referenced his former Spanish Serenader radio persona in a plot involving a Brazilian singer on a local radio show (Other characters in and out of the Gildersleeve orbit included In the 1970s, Peary found work as a voice actor, most memorably as Big Ben, the whale with a clock in its tail, in two Peary worked as a disc jockey at radio station WMGM in New York City.Peary spent most of the rest of his life voice-acting in animated work by In March 1985, at age 76, Peary died in California at Jaker, Bill; Sulek, Frank and Kanze, Peter. I am a big fan of the radio show and also of the television show and I would recommend watching the movies whenever TCM runs them.
