I was looking at it as a chore to read, which made me stop reading it. I love the characters, and get bummed when somebody dies. I love Robert Conroy's alternatiI loved the creative premise and realism. The events described in this alternate time line are interesting, even if they are blatantly near exact historical parallels with different countries names slapped on them. Some of the major characters of the past trilogy meet their maker, some survive but move on, and others seem destined to return in subsequent novels. I was looking at it as a chore to read, which made me stop reading it. Two, three, or four separate plot threads at the same time--okay, I can handle it. Nothing more, nothing less.Turtledove: you know what you'll get.

Pancho from the Cisco Kid, Leo Carrillo was the comic sidekick then and Jiminy Cricket, or the guy who did his voice was Gunty, but I thought he was Russel Hayden because he looked just like him, but I had to look it up and it was Robert Barrat..Turns out I'm that fool yessiree and I'm not gonna make it to 93.. Neil Smith debunks that assumption, offering an incisive argument that American globalism had a distinct geography and was pieced together as part of a powerful geographical vision. The story was non-linear:it was all over the place. I loved the creative premise and realism. The events and people are quite believable.A great book that creates an interesting take on combining WWI, the Civil War and the era inbetween WWI and WWII. I would say this volume of the series was even better than the previous, which kind of felt like it was dragging on a bit there at the end of the war. ThStart with Turtledove's How Few Remain, which explains how this alternate history begins with a different outcome in the Antietam campaign of 1862. As the conflict engulfed Europe, the C.S.A. Then, after a generation of relative peace, The Great War exploded worldwide. Along with the books before this in the sequence, the period between the world wars could plausibly have happened this way. That said, Turtledove explores some pretty interesting ideas: How would a defeated/humiliated South behave?
