This wasn't the best one I've read as the plot seemed to take a long time to get going and I felt it could have been edited a bit better. In the midst of all this, Dalziel is participating in a locally produced medieval mystery play-and has been cast in the role of God. You must be a registered user to use the IMDb rating plugin. He sees the ringleader brought in on an unrelated charge. I read the book after I saw this episode. I would like to read more of this author.Another tremendous novel featuring Pascoe and Dalziel; as ever when reading Reginald Hill's work there is tremendous social comment subtly woven into a cracking tale.Synopsis: one woman dead and one threatening to die sets Superintendent Dalziel and Inspector Pascoe hunting for a killer and a potential suicide. While I enjoyed the first of the Dalziel and Pascoe mysteries, While I enjoyed the first of the Dalziel and Pascoe mysteries, "Bones and Silence" is one of the many Dalziel/Pascoe mysteries by Reginald Hill that I have read although the first I have discussed on goodreads. Maybe there's something I'll be kicking myself over when I re-read. June 1st 1991

Basically, about 150 pages of the middle couThis is a very well written book. Solid entry in the series, however nothing special. But when questioned about the events, both men swear the woman killed herself and what Dalziel saw was each of them trying to get the gun away from her before it went off. And I wasn't interested enough in the characters to enjoy the investigative process.

Welcome back.

Ironically, ... We’d love your help.

Dalziel’s version of events is called into question and the coroner returns a suicide verdict.Dalziel soon embarks on a vendetta against the man he believes is responsible. For the duration of the book I WAS there, mixed up in the murders and gore of that Yorkshire man and his police force.A convoluted story with many twists and turns and a couple of background stories running parallel to the main theme. There is no doubt who the culprit is - it is just seeing hoe Dalziel pieces it all together before he can really the murderer.

My head was spinning from the changes of direction in whodunnit&why, but the result of the letters Dalziel was getting, and from whom, absolutely shocked me.

--Publishers Weekly "No other genre author ... writes with such feeling and understanding of silently unhappy women as does Mr. Hill in his tender character portraits of the town wives and daughters." I'd recommend it to anyone interested in murder mysteries, especially if you enjoyed "Murder Call. But after my first reading I thought it was a bit of a cheat on the resolution to the secondary strand.

As I finished the book it was obvious how a good editor could have cut out large parts of this book and created an even better written and a really great story. In theory then, Bones and Silence (1990), the only one of Hill’s novels to win the prize, ought to be his finest book.

It’s a brilliantly original twist on the classic crime novel formula: not a whodunit but a who-will-do-it, with the reader scanning the cast of suspects to find not a murderer but a potential suicide.Hill expertly juggles his two plots, while weaving in a third strand in which Dalziel is cajoled by a sexy theatre director into taking part in a large-scale outdoor production of the medieval York Mystery plays, playing the part of—who else could it be?—God.The craftsman’s skill with which Hill counterpoints plot with sub-plot is supreme; it would have been a waste, you feel, if he had ever written in a genre that didn’t demand such rigorous skill in plot construction.

--Kirkus Reviews, starred review "If further evidence were needed, this latest mystery confirms Hill's place among top British writers who produce solid stories of detection that succeed as first-rate novels exploring human character ... A powerful ending." Your Web browser is not enabled for JavaScript. It may not have helped that in my first time reading a book in this series I didn't start with the first one. Dalziel starts receiving letters from a woman who has decided to commit suicide, and have also decided to let know the fat man of her decision through a series of letters.

Now he finds the case shrouded in uncertainty and a string of contradictory statements.
